Gabe Barker, the son of Magnolia’s Ben and Karen Barker, cut his teeth at San Francisco’s Pizzeria Delfina. He masterminded Mercato’s crust. While Napoli and its ilk emulate the Neapolitan crust, with its soft texture and black mottle, Mercato serves a chewier Neapolitan-New York hybrid. It combines Caputo "OO" flour, King Arthur bread flour, and a sourdough starter that Karen Barker has maintained continuously since 1990. "The starter has gone on vacation with us, gone to the beach with us," says Ben, with the note of affection, amazement, and resignation usually reserved for geriatric cats.
He went on to identify Haiti, El Salvador and Africa as the countries in question – never mind that Africa is a continent – and he reserved special animus for Haiti. "Why do we need more Haitians?" he asked, according to people familiar with the meeting. "Take them out."
The seven single-artist showcases of Arlington Arts Center’s “Fall Solos 2018” (plus a separate one upstairs) aren’t linked thematically. Aimee Gilmore fills a gallery with motherhood-related things, including a baby bottle remade in fuchsia chrome, a huge print of breast milk spattered on Mylar and a mirror printed with the word “wow” (which inverts to “mom”).
The exhibit will be included in the cost of general admission, which runs $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, $10 for students (with ID), $8 for children aged 5-15; and free for children 4 and under.

Pizzeria Mercato, the Barker family’s first post-Magnolia Grill venture, is a buzzy, pricey, James Beard-caliber departure from Carrboro’s earthy, earnest somnolence. Malfunctioning electrical transformers and Hollywood cellphones are this sort of buzzy.
In an industry of legendary tempers, Abloh is known for his calm. He is a methodical thinker who encounters setbacks with poised silence. “Even when he’s upset, it’s a chill, smooth upset,” his friend the fashion designer Heron Preston, who has known Abloh for fifteen years, told me. Kanye West once said that Abloh had been “the strategist” in their partnership. “I’m like Tesla . . . like Nikola Tesla, not the car,” West said. “I’m thinking of all these ideas, and Virgil is able to take all of those ideas and then architect them, because he is an architect.”
